The setting up

Henan Provincial Key Laboratory for Crop Improvement is located in Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The setting-up of the this Laboratory was approved by Henan Provincial Planning Commission in December, 1996. The construction was officially completed in 1999. The current Director is Principal Research Scientist Zhang Xinyou, and the Academic Committee is chaired by Principal Research Scientist Dong Qingzhou. The key lab has a strong and young scientific community, including 30 senior research scientists, 8 research scientists, 4 junior researchers or technicians and 5 administrators.
Research directions

The overall objective of this laboratory is to combine the new biotechnology with conventional genetic analysis and breeding to solve fundamental scientific problems in the fields of genetics and crop improvement, to develop critical technologies for breeding applications and to create new germplasm for varietal development. Researchers in the lab have also made significant efforts on crop breadings,mainly emphasizing on the improvement of crop productivity and quality,including wheat, maize, cotton, soybean, peanut, and sesame. The research activities are conducted simultaneously at molecular, cellular, and individual level.
Facilities

The Laboratory has a total space of 1200 square meters. We also have field facilities including a greenhouse, seed storage facilities and bird-net equipped fields. Major equipment includes Confocal Imaging System , FACSCalibur flow cytometer , iCycler iQ Real-Time Detection System , Biological Inverted Microscope ,Spectrophotometer, Ultracentrifuge, high-speed centrifuges, DNA Transfer System, Electroporation Instrument, Plant Growth Chamber,. Nucleic Acid and Protein Analyzer, UV fluorescent Gel Documentation System, UV fluorescent Gel Documentation System, and Ultrapure Water Systems. We also have several hundred pieces of smaller but essential equipment. These facilities can meet the needs of research activities in the Laboratory.
Collaborations and exchanges

We have collaborative relationship with institutes and laboratories in Australia, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. Over 20 people (times) in the Laboratory worked abroad as visiting scientist or participated international scientific meetings in the last five years. We have also received guest researchers from United Kingdom, and developed collaborations with over 10 institutions in China. |
